French green hydrogen producer Lhyfe and European technology group STRABAG have signed a strategic framework agreement to jointly develop green hydrogen projects, primarily in Germany, with the possibility of expanding to other European countries in the future.
The partnership is aimed at speeding up the planning and execution of hydrogen projects by combining Lhyfe’s experience in producing and supplying renewable hydrogen with STRABAG’s expertise in large-scale construction, engineering, financing, and infrastructure delivery.
The agreement comes at a time when Germany is implementing the EU’s Renewable Energy Directive III (RED III), which introduces binding requirements for the use of renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBOs). This is expected to create a more predictable and regulated market for green hydrogen, supporting long-term investment decisions.
Lhyfe, which operates multiple electrolysis-based hydrogen production sites in Europe and supplies RFNBO-certified hydrogen, contributes operational production and logistics capabilities. STRABAG contributes end-to-end project development capabilities, including design, construction, and financing support.
Both companies state that the collaboration is intended to:
- accelerate hydrogen project development timelines
- reduce project development and execution risks
- support scaling hydrogen infrastructure in Germany and potentially across Europe
Overall, the partnership is positioned as a way to combine industrial hydrogen production expertise with large-scale infrastructure delivery to help expand Europe’s green hydrogen market under the new regulatory framework.
