Sener, Acciona, TSK and Crowie have inaugurated a 55 MW concentrated solar power (CSP) plant in Northern Cape province, South Africa.
The four firms built the Bokpoort power plant in consortium after being awarded a turnkey contract by Saudi group ACWA Power. The €300 million power plant is already in operation.
Bokpoort, located near the town of Upington, uses Sener’s parabolic trough technology and is equipped with a 1300 MWth energy storage system that can provide energy for 9.3 hours of operation. The solar field of the plant consists of 180 loops and it annual production will be over 230 GWh (net). Sener, Acciona and TSK said in a statement.
Sener and Acciona are also building a 100 MW CSP plant at Kathu in South Africa, under a contract with Engie. Kathu will also be equipped with thermal energy storage technology and is due to start operating in 2018.
