Chinese energy company Beijing Linyi Yunchuan Energy Technology has successfully flown an experimental airborne wind energy system (AWES) that uses a large helium-filled blimp carrying 12 wind turbines to generate electricity at altitude. The S2000 test took place above Sichuan Province, where the craft reached about 2,000 metres and produced 385 kWh of power.

The system is designed to tap stronger, steadier winds high above the ground, with electricity sent back to earth through a tether cable and into the grid. The airship measures about 60 metres long, 40 metres high and 40 metres wide, and is rated at 3 MW total capacity. Developers say it could serve remote sites such as border outposts and could also complement conventional ground-based wind farms.

The concept points to a possible new route for wind power in places where land is scarce or offshore development is difficult, including parts of mainland Europe and Japan. But the technology still faces major hurdles, including the reliability of the tether cable, maintenance logistics and aviation safety, especially in populated areas where a 2,000-metre tether could pose a hazard to aircraft.

The test adds to a growing wave of experimental wind technologies aimed at capturing better wind resources higher in the atmosphere. Whether the S2000 can scale beyond demonstration will depend on how well it can prove safe, durable and cost-effective operation over time.
