The European Investment Bank (EIB) has increased its financing framework for Finnish green hydrogen and e-methane developer Nordic Ren-Gas to €680 million, up from €230 million, supporting the company’s planned portfolio of synthetic methane projects.
The EIB board approved the increase for project-level debt financing across Ren-Gas’s e-methane portfolio in Finland. The first project covered by the framework is the Tampere facility, which the company expects to begin constructing in the fourth quarter of 2026.
Ren-Gas is developing six e-methane production plants across Finland. The projects are being developed with local energy utilities, with the aim of integrating hydrogen production, renewable energy, heat and existing gas and energy infrastructure.
The financing framework is intended to provide debt funding as individual projects reach investment decisions. Ren-Gas has already secured long-term offtake agreements covering green hydrogen and heat from its projects, providing contracted revenues that can support project financing.
The approach reflects the increasingly integrated structure of power-to-gas projects, where the economics depend not only on electrolyser and methane-production costs but also on the ability to use by-product heat and secure long-term customers.
“This is an important milestone for us and the industry,” said Ren-Gas CFO Juhani Häyrinen. He added that the EIB decision provides evidence that bankable green hydrogen projects can attract financing partners.
For Ren-Gas, the larger framework comes as it moves from portfolio development towards construction. The Tampere project is expected to be the first to enter the construction phase, while the remaining facilities form part of the company’s wider Finnish e-methane programme.
The financing does not represent a single €680 million project investment; rather, it establishes a potential debt-financing envelope from which individual projects can draw subject to their own financing arrangements and approvals.
