Eneco is making plans for the construction of a 49 MW biomass power plant in the Delfzijl port area of northern Holland.
The Dutch utility has awarded the contract for the construction of the new plant to a consortium consisting of Ballast Nedam of the Netherlands, Finland’s Metso Power Oy and Areva Renewables GmbH of Germany. It will be fuelled by recycled waste wood chips and is sceduled for commissioning in 2013.
The new facility is in line with Eneco’s strategy to create a fully sustainable energy supply chain. Compared to producing electricity in a fossil power plant, this facility will achieve a CO2 emissions saving of some 250 000 tonnes annually, says Eneco.
Wood for the new plant will be brought to Delfzijl by boat, train and truck from other parts of the Netherlands as well as neighbouring countries. The plant will use around 300 000 tonnes of wood per year.
