The Nordlicht offshore wind cluster has reached a key milestone ahead of the start of offshore construction later this year, with delivery of the first monopiles and transition pieces for Nordlicht I.
Manufactured by EEW and CS Wind, the components were delivered ahead of schedule, marking strong progress across the project and highlighting close coordination between Vattenfall and its suppliers. Each monopile measures up to 80.5 metres long and weighs around 1,290 tonnes, while the transition pieces stand 23.7 metres high and weigh about 362 tonnes. In total, 68 foundation units will be installed for Nordlicht I.
The milestone underscores accelerating momentum behind the 1.6 GW cluster, which is being developed in line with North Sea nations’ drive to expand offshore wind and reinforce Europe’s energy independence. Jonas van Mansfeld, acting Head of BU Offshore at Vattenfall, described Nordlicht as a cornerstone of Europe’s future energy system, citing its role in helping industries decarbonise and reducing fossil fuel dependence.
Once completed, Nordlicht I will become Germany’s largest offshore wind farm, delivering 980 MW of capacity. Together with the 630 MW Nordlicht II – now fully permitted and backed by Vattenfall’s final investment decision – the cluster will supply about 6 TWh of fossil‑free electricity annually, contributing to Europe’s energy security and climate goals.
