Carbon removal specialist and Drax subsidiary Elimini has signed an agreement with Greater Copenhagen’s public utility HOFOR to explore the development of a large-scale bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) facility. HOFOR plans to cut emissions from unit 4 of the Amagerværket CHP plant, a 150 MW wood chip-fired unit plant and one of Denmark’s largest point sources of biogenic CO2, by deploying BECCS. HOFOR will transform unit 4 into a biomass and carbon capture and storage facility expected to produce renewable electricity and heat and remove hundreds of thousands of tonnes of CO2 annually.

It has also formed a CDR marketing agreement with Elimini to establish a commercialisation pathway for the project’s verified carbon removal credits.

The Amagerværket Power Station currently produces the equivalent of 25% of Copenhagen’s district heating from biomass.
