Plug Power has commissioned a 5 MW GenEco electrolyzer at Cleanergy Solutions Namibia’s green hydrogen facility in Walvis Bay, marking Africa’s first fully integrated commercial plant. The installation, integrated with a 5 MW solar park and 5.9 MWh battery storage, supports off-grid hydrogen production to fuel trucks, port equipment, rail and ships through Namibia’s key Walvis Bay harbour.

The project, which opened in September, creates a complete chain from renewables to hydrogen refueling, including on-site conversions for dual-fuel vehicles blending hydrogen with conventional fuels. Plug’s PEM electrolyzer technology converts locally generated clean power into renewable hydrogen, positioning the facility as a blueprint for Namibia’s hydrogen mobility expansion and regional exports.

Jose Luis Crespo, Plug’s President and Chief Revenue Officer, highlighted the deployment as proof that green hydrogen is transitioning to viable commercial scale in emerging markets. The Walvis Bay plant leverages Namibia’s abundant solar resources and supportive policies to decarbonise transport and industry, with potential to replicate across Africa, the Middle East and Australia as global hydrogen investment surges.
