Swedish hydropower startup SeaPattern has secured €5 million in private funding led by Industrifonden, marking one of the largest recent investments in Europe’s hydropower sector. The financing round also included existing investors such as Norrsken Launcher, pushing SeaPattern’s total funding past €6.5 million.

Founded in 2020, SeaPattern designs modular, floating turbines paired with AI-driven software to increase electricity output from existing hydropower plants by 7 to 10 percent. This approach aims to expand renewable energy generation without the environmental impact or costs of building new infrastructure.

The company has been testing and validating its technology at the Svartåfors hydropower plant in Sweden in collaboration with Tekniska Verken. Plans are underway to deploy a multiturbine cluster for further demonstration of enhanced capacity and cost efficiency.

SeaPattern’s CEO Niklas Boman said the company’s mission aligns with Europe’s pressing need to accelerate clean energy transition while protecting natural ecosystems, and highlighted the importance of the new funding in supporting the company’s shift from initial field trials to industrial-scale operations.

A memorandum of understanding was also signed with a major European utility, signalling commercial interest in SeaPattern’s solution. Investors praised both the technology’s performance and its scalable business model.

With thousands of hydropower plants across Europe, SeaPattern aims to significantly contribute to increasing renewable energy output in the continent’s power mix.

This development is a noteworthy advance in hydropower innovation, offering a sustainable option to boost clean energy without expanding physical infrastructure.
