Vestas is to test a new 7 NW wind turbine at a demonstration site owned by Dong Energy after the two companies signed a co-operation agreement.

Vestas’ V164-7.0MW offshore wind turbine will be installed in 2013 at the site in waters off Frederikshavn. Dong Energy is to invest a total of DKK240 million in establishing the test site.

The V164-7.0MW turbine is designed specifically for harsh offshore conditions, says Vestas. The agreement calls for the two companies to cooperate on technical due diligence of the new unit.

“We expect a great deal from the opportunity to work closely together with the world’s leading offshore wind farm operator on the V164-7.0 MW turbine,” said Ditlev Engel, President and CEO of Vestas Wind Systems. “The test installation will provide Dong Energy with the most detailed insight into the turbine, and we look forward to this opportunity to provide Dong Energy with the confidence they require to invest in the turbine for commercial projects further down the line.”

“Demonstration activities are an important part of maintaining and developing DONG Energy’s position as a market leader in offshore wind power,” said Anders Eldrup, CEO of DONG Energy, which has permission to install up to six turbines at the demonstration site. “We are delighted to be testing Vestas’ new dedicated offshore wind turbine. New and more efficient turbines are a crucial part of the efforts to reduce the construction costs for offshore wind farms.”
