Minneapolis-based energy provider Xcel Energy has announced it will supply power to a new Google data centre planned for Pine Island, Minnesota, under an agreement that includes 1.9 GW of new clean energy generation. The deal links one of the state’s largest technology investments to its clean energy goals while ensuring no added costs for existing Xcel customers.
The agreement, to be filed soon with the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission, will support Google’s core services such as Search, Maps, and YouTube. It also includes 1.4 GW of new wind, 200 MW of solar, and 300 MW of long-duration energy storage, along with a $50 million contribution to Xcel’s Capacity*Connect Program to boost grid reliability.
A major element is a 300 MW Form Energy iron-air battery system capable of storing 30 gigawatt-hours – set to become the world’s largest battery project by capacity. Google will fund all service and infrastructure costs, aligning with Xcel’s goal of keeping rates low and reliability high.
“This agreement advances Minnesota’s clean energy vision while delivering lasting economic benefits,” said Bria Shea, president of Xcel Energy–Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota. Minnesota Chamber of Commerce CEO Doug Loon said the partnership reflects a model approach for balancing innovation with environmental responsibility.
