RWE has secured planning permission from Germany’s Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency for Nordseecluster B, clearing the way for the second phase of its 1.6 GW offshore wind project in the North Sea.

The approval covers the NC 3 and NC 4 sites and allows RWE to prepare for offshore construction next year. Nordseecluster A, the first 660 MW phase, is already under construction, with foundation work complete and turbine installation due to start this summer. Full grid connection for that phase is expected by early 2027.

Nordseecluster B will add another 900 MW and is scheduled to reach commercial operation in early 2029. Some component production has already started, with foundation installation planned for next year and turbine installation set for 2028.

The wider Nordseecluster is located about 46 kilometres north of Borkum and 50 kilometres north of Juist. Once both phases are complete, the project is expected to generate around 6.5 TWh of climate-friendly electricity a year.

RWE, which holds a 51% stake alongside Norges Bank Investment Management’s 49%, will lead construction and operations across the project’s full life cycle. The company said the project will support industrial decarbonisation, including through power supply agreements such as its recent 110 MW PPA with Amazon for Nordseecluster B.

Alongside this project, RWE is developing several other major offshore wind farms across Europe, including Sofia in the UK, Thor in Denmark, and OranjeWind in the Netherlands.
